Bruno Fernandes transfer secret revealed by source at Tottenham, he cried
Bruno Fernandes cried in the Sporting CP chairman’s office after his transfer to Tottenham collapsed in 2019, according to Ian Ladyman.
The journalist reported via the Daily Mail website (21 December) that the transfer fell through after Spurs and Sporting failed to agree on the structure of the deal to long-term chairman Daniel Levy’s disappointment.
A source, meanwhile, said that was “typical” of the Lilywhites at the time as they watched Manchester United swoop in for the Portugal international six months later.
Bruno Fernandes a huge miss for Daniel Levy at Tottenham, Manchester United benefit
Five years down the line, Fernandes has proved to be a huge miss for the North London giants.
Since joining Manchester United for an initial sum of £47million in January 2020 [BBC], the midfielder has bagged 85 goals and 76 assists from 258 appearances across all competitions.
The 30-year-old has helped the Red Devils win two trophies so far and also became their captain in July 2023.
There is no doubt that Levy will be disappointed that he could not get a deal for Fernandes across the line.
In a similar instance, Tottenham missed out on the signing of Luis Diaz in January 2022, with Liverpool hijacking the transfer.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the Colombian that January transfer window, but saw him eventually join the Reds in a deal worth £49m [Sky Sports].
According to Ladyman, Levy is determined to avoid such embarrassments in the future, having already caused “bloodshed” in the recruitment department with jettison and new appointments.
In other Tottenham news, Alan Shearer has predicted the result of Spurs’ Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday, 22 December.
