Brendan Rodgers ‘could be tempted’ by Tottenham job as big claim emerges

Ange Postecoglou remains in his post at Tottenham for now, although a potential successor for his job is already being eyed up.

A Premier League position of 16th means it looks increasingly unlikely that the Australian will stay put in north London, even if he guides his side to Europa League victory.

One man who has been linked with replacing Postecoglou at Tottenham in the summer is Brendan Rodgers, despite the highlighted dangers of an appointment from Celtic.

Rodgers to consider Tottenham

Tottenham have progressed into the semi-finals of the Europa League and a battle against Bodo/Glimt is all that stands between Spurs and a place in the final.

Should the Lilywhites pick up a trophy this season, Postecoglou will have achieved his aims of bringing silverware to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium within two years of being boss.

Nevertheless, the disappointment of Premier League form has left many questions over whether a trophy is enough, with the answer looking increasingly more likely to be no.

If Daniel Levy is going to make a change at the helm this summer, then the chief needs to be well prepared ahead of the transfer window, meaning consideration has to start now.

Rodgers has been linked to the Tottenham job already and while some supporters may have a worry about repeating the patterns of their last poach, it seems as though the current Celtic boss could be tempted to a move away from the Scottish Premiership once again.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail (25 April, page 75), Steven Donn said: “Rodgers is now 52-years-old. He came within a whisker of winning the English Premier League with Liverpool. He surely still harbours bigger ambitions than racking up trophies or even Trebles in Scotland?

“He could well be tempted at having another tilt at the title down south or moving to a club with a Champions League pedigree. Spurs, of course, believe they can tick both those boxes, despite their travails this season.”

Rodgers a risky move for Tottenham

Rodgers has previously shown his abilities in the Premier League, having come very close to the title with Liverpool, which should fill supporters with some confidence.

In his role at Leicester City, the Northern Irish boss guided the Foxes to Europa League football as well as an FA Cup title win, suggesting he can achieve the levels wanted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, the boss also suffered relegation to the Championship with Leicester and, since then, has returned to the Scottish Premiership, a league that has shown it does not always translate seamlessly to the English top flight.

The 52-year-old could well be tempted with a move back to England, as Donn says, the stakes are higher with Spurs than they are with a Celtic side that is facing no competition in the domestic league.

However, if Levy made a second appointment from Celtic which failed to pay off, he would surely be facing even more backlash than he currently is.
