Ben Davies immediately reacts as emotional retirement now confirmed

Ben Davies’ long association with Tottenham could be drawing to a close.

Davies became Mauricio Pochettino’s first signing at Spurs when he joined from Swansea in July 2014, and has gone on to make 358 appearances for the Lilywhites.

The dependable defender has primarily been deployed at left-back, but has increasingly seen himself play through the centre as years have passed.

Earlier this summer, Tottenham triggered a one-year extension in Davies’ contract, but his future remains unclear now that he has turned 32 years old.

Davies reacts to Wayne Hennessey’s retirement

Davies has been linked with Championship side Wrexham this summer as the ambitious Welsh side secured their third consecutive promotion.

Tottenham‘s longest-serving player has never hidden his admiration for Wales, for whom he has played 96 times over his career and is vice-captain.

The versatile defender remains a key part of his national side’s setup, despite his minutes for Spurs gradually decreasing over the last three years.

Davies was quick to react on social media as Wales posted a touching tribute to his international colleague Wayne Hennessey on Instagram (16 July).

The goalkeeper officially announced his retirement from football, prompting Davies to like the post on his country’s official Instagram account.

The former teammates lined up together as the Dragons made history in reaching the semi-finals in Euro 2016, as well as the quarter-finals of the World Cup two years later alongside Spurs legend Gareth Bale.

Spurs old-guard almost over

Davies’ potential departure this summer would leave captain Son Heung-min as the last remnant of Pochettino’s era at Tottenham, despite the Argentine leaving less than six years ago.

Son himself has been linked with a Spurs exit, which would spell the end of the old guard at Tottenham, who have gone through a massive rebuild.

Thomas Frank could opt to keep one of the long-serving players for one more year to offer some continuity during the transition, but there is no doubt that the Lilywhites are entering a new era.
