Arsene Wenger: Tottenham are Premier League title contenders

Tottenham are contenders for the Premier League title this season, according to former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Spurs went five points clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 win away at Crystal Palace on Friday night (27 October), although the Gunners have since closed that gap down to two and Manchester City can do the same on Sunday (29 October) when they play Manchester United.

Wenger has been wowed by the signings Ange Postecoglou made in the summer and believes that key additions in the defence and midfield have helped transform Tottenham into title challengers.

“I like to always say what I feel and deeply, I believe Tottenham will be one of the contenders for the league,” Wenger told beIN SPORTS, as shown on X on Saturday (28 October).

Andy Gray then asked Wenger what’s impressed him about Spurs so far. The former Arsenal boss said: “They bought [James] Maddison, who’s a great player and who is that link from low midfield to high midfield and he’s added some technical creativity to the team.

“They signed [Micky] van de Ven, who I find exceptional.

“Overall, the movement from [Heung-min] Son into the middle looks very good.”

Ex-Spurs right-back Alan Hutton told Tottenham News:

“No, not for me anyway,” said Hutton when asked if Spurs can win the Premier League.

Look, they have been outstanding.

A new manager has come in and turned them around so quickly. I think that’s why I was so surprised when they went out of the Carabao Cup because that was a real route to try and win silverware.

If Postecoglou gets money to spend in January, it will depend on who he brings in, that’s the big question mark.

“If he was to go and get Ivan Toney, someone of that ilk, then we can sit and talk about it.

If they are still in the first, second, third area, then I would be saying, there’s a possibility.

If that doesn’t happen, I have a feeling they will fade away.

“Finishing in the top four is a more realistic aim.”
