Arsenal ‘dealt seven-figure financial blow’ after what Johnson did for Tottenham

Tottenham are having a terrible season and currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

The only thing left to play for at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this term is the Europa League with all domestic competitions off the table.

With that in mind, the Lilywhites will no doubt be looking at their rivals with a hint of jealousy as Arsenal sit second in the table, having just beaten Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Spurs may have got one over on them indirectly.

Tottenham serve Arsenal financial blow

Tottenham supporters don’t like to spend too long pondering finances, with chairman Daniel Levy renowned for being reluctant to put money into his side.

However, what Brennan Johnson did against Southampton has impacted Arsenal financially, too.

Ange Postecoglou’s side may have been in poor form for most of the season, but they were able to comfortably see off bottom of the table Southampton with a 3-1 victory on Sunday (6 April).

Johnson was on the scoresheet twice, meaning a 90th minute goal from the Saints was only a consolation, especially after Mathys Tel went on to score a penalty in the 96th minute of the game.

The result meant that Southampton’s relegation back to the Championship was confirmed with former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, The Express has reported (9 April) that Southampton’s relegation takes a £1million bonus off the transfer fee they received for Ramsdale.

The 26-year-old was sold for £18m but if a survival bonus had been triggered, that cost would have bumped it up to £19million.

Therefore, although the Saints looked doomed for relegation anyway, it was Tottenham’s actions that ensured Arsenal will not be able to get their hands on that money.

Levy has to turn Tottenham around

Tottenham prepare to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday (10 April) in the first leg of their quarter-final.

The result of this game could well dictate the immediate future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with some suggesting that is the only thing keeping Postecoglou in a job.

Tottenham’s form this season.

Whether Levy will be prepared to pull the trigger on his managerial appointment is yet to be seen, but when the summer transfer window arrives, the chief will need to have everything in place to prepare for next season.

With no chance of finishing in a position to gain European football next season, the Europa League is the only way Spurs can achieve this aim. Without it, revenue will decrease.

However, if this is reflected in the summer business that the North London outfit conducts, it could well result in another lousy season next term.
