Ange Postecoglou ‘to leave Tottenham’ before he is sacked after what he said

Ange Postecoglou has endured a turbulent season in charge of Tottenham Hotspur, somehow sitting 16th in the Premier League table.

The Australians’ saving grace could be the Europa League trophy, which remains a strong possibility after Spurs defeated Bodø/Glimt 3-1 in the semi-final first leg.

Despite their crucial win over the Norwegian outfit, Postecoglou remains likely to be sacked as Spurs manager at the end of the season.

However, the Australian could leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before that happens, after what he previously said.

Postecoglou could have last laugh at Tottenham

Spurs have been a laughing stock for much of the season due to their treacherous Premier League form.

As things stand, the London club are on track for their worst top-flight season since the seventies when they were relegated to the second tier.

Tottenham have been dismal this season

In fairness to the former Celtic manager, he has faced a prolonged injury crisis, with a wealth of first-team players out injured over the campaign.

Postecoglou has not been short of confidence, though, and made a bold statement earlier in the season that he always wins silverware in his second season at a club.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast (5 May), Micah Richards and Alan Shearer discussed what the 59-year-old could do if he lifted silverware.

Richards said: “Imagine Ange, though, he always says ‘I always win a trophy in my second season’. I can just imagine him at the end saying, ‘Alright, what you saying now?’ and just leaving.”

Shearer replied: “I agree with that. I think because he’s always said that, and I think there’s such strong reports aren’t there that even if he wins it, he could be off anyway.

“For him, if he does win it and then he just walks off and says ‘Thanks guys, see you later’, big pay off – good for him.”

Postecoglou likely to leave this summer

There has been speculation around Postecoglou’s future for quite some time, with Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola and Thomas Frank all linked with the job.

The Lilywhites’ pursuit of the Spaniard was dealt a significant blow after reports emerged that Iraola is set to extend his contract at AFC Bournemouth.

With the potential manager pool thinning in North London already, a decision on the Australian’s future will likely be on hold until the completion of the season.

If Spurs do lift the Europa League trophy, then they will be a Champions League outfit next season and Postecoglou would have delivered his promise.

However, it seems that the 59-year-old will leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium regardless of what unravels, and it could be on his terms.
