Ange Postecoglou ‘to go down in history’ despite Tottenham embarrassment
Tottenham have the chance to win their first trophy since 2008 as they face Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
Ange Postecoglou has led Spurs to Bilbao where they are 90 minutes away from winning a European trophy, but this comes after a truly miserable domestic season.
With Tottenham in 17th in the Premier League, this game may likely determine Postecoglou’s future in North London after a season in which he has been heavily criticised.
However, if Spurs do win the trophy, Postecoglou’s name will be immortalised in club history, even if he were to leave immediately after.

Michael Dawson defends Postecoglou ahead of Europa League final
Former Spurs captain Michael Dawson has now leapt to Postecoglou’s defence, and claimed that the Australian would be remembered forever if he can win the Europa League.
Dawson was part of the Tottenham squad which last won a trophy in 2008, and he believes that while Spurs have had a poor domestic season, that will be forgotten if they triumph in Europe.
“Ange will go down in history if he can win it,” Dawson told Gambling.com.
“Because winning trophies, that is history. We still talk about 2008 and Juande Ramos, who got sacked eight months after we won [the 2008 League Cup] in February.”
However, Dawson has admitted that the domestic form needs to improve.
Position | Club | Games played | Goal difference | Points |
16. | Manchester United | 37 | -12 | 39 |
17. | Tottenham | 37 | +2 | 38 |
18. | Ipswich Town | 37 | -44 | 22 |
“He and the players will realise that their Premier League campaign has been well below par, and embarrassing really at times, with how many games they have lost, and being in 17th position,” he added.
“So he’s put all his eggs in one basket, and I’ve got absolutely no problem with that. They’ve been criticised, they’ve been questioned, yes, they’ve had injuries, but it ultimately hasn’t been good enough.
“So it’s all on this game and it can be a positive season, because Spurs will have Champions League football next season if they win.”

Postecoglou must win the Europa League to stay at Tottenham
The upcoming game is so important for Tottenham, with the consequences huge, no matter the result. A victory would technically make this their most successful season since winning the UEFA Cup in 1984.
However, a defeat would see Spurs fail to qualify for Europe, finishing with their highest number of losses and their worst league finish in Premier League history.
Some fans have lost faith in Postecoglou, even if he lifts the Europa League, but a defeat would almost certainly spell an end to his time in North London, and everything now rests on this one game against Manchester United and Ruben Amorim.
With the game only one sleep away, nerves are starting to grow for those in red and white.
