Ange Postecoglou shares surgery update on Tottenham duo Romero and van de Ven

Tottenham have been without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for the last couple of months.

Spurs have been dumped out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and sit 14th in the Premier League. Therefore, the UEFA Europa League is more or less all the club have left to play for this season.

As a result, Ange Postecoglou is under serious pressure in North London, with Mauricio Pochettino the favourite to replace the Australian in the Tottenham hot seat.

However, should Postecoglou be sacked, he will no doubt feel as though he was dealt a pretty tough hand with the number of players who have been unavailable to him as a result of injury, which includes – but certainly isn’t limited to – Romero and van de Ven.

Ahead of the Premier League clash against Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16 February) it looks as though Postecoglou will be able to recall three of his injured players to the starting lineup.

However, Romero and van de Ven will once again miss out, and Postecoglou has provided an update on whether or not either of the defensive duo require surgery.

Speaking ahead of the clash with United, Postecoglou said [via Football London, 14 February], “Never close to either of them needing surgery. Never been discussed. Surgery has never ever entered discussion with either player.”

Fans have been left bemused as to when Romero and van de Ven will be able to return to action, with some calls even being made for van de Ven to be sold.

However, fans will just be relieved to know that surgery isn’t required and that the centre-backs could make their returns soon.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven missed at Tottenham

With very little left to play for in the Premier League, supporters likely won’t be too concerned about Romero and van de Ven missing out against Ruben Amorim’s side.

However, what will be of concern is whether or not both players can return in time for the Europa League knockout phase.

That competition is Spurs’ only real chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season and ending the club’s miserable trophy drought.

As a result, if at least one of Romero or van de Ven can return in time for the next European fixture, it will be a big boost for Postecoglou and Tottenham.
