Ange Postecoglou set to resign from Tottenham – ‘Small club mentality’

Ally McCoist has delivered a verdict on Ange Postecoglou’s exit from Tottenham at the end of the season.

After a disastrous domestic campaign, Spurs have managed to reach the final of the Europa League and are a win away from winning their first trophy since 2008.

They will play Manchester United in the grand finale at Bilbao, another team that have endured a torrid Premier League season.

Postecoglou to call it a day if he wins Europa League, claims McCoist

McCoist believes that the Australian may end up leaving Tottenham if he succeeds in winning silverware for them.

The former Rangers striker admitted that he hopes he stays put at the North London outfit, but does not think that he wants to.

He also slammed Spurs fans for the small-club mentality as they wanted their team to lose to Manchester City last season, as it would prevent Arsenal from winning the title.

McCoist told talkSPORT BET: “Something tells me that if Ange Postecoglou wins Tottenham the Europa League, he’ll say he’s done his job and call it a day at Spurs.

“I hope he stays, but I’m not sure he wants to. It’s just a hunch, I’ve got no idea what Ange will do, but I just have a feeling he’ll move on after delivering on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season – that is, if he does win it!

“I was reminded of last season when Spurs needed to lose to Manchester City in order to stop Arsenal from potentially winning the title. A lot of Spurs fans wanted to throw that game away, in contrast to Ange, who held the belief of trying to win every game possible, no matter its implications on other teams. I think that’s when he got a glimpse of the mindset. Whatever way you look at it, it’s a small club mentality!”

Tottenham do not seem to be progressing under Postecoglou

Even if Postecoglou leads Spurs to Europa League glory, it may not signal genuine progress, as the squad’s apparent disconnect from his philosophy suggests a change is needed.

While reaching the Europa League final against Manchester United highlights Postecoglou’s tactical nous, Tottenham’s dismal Premier League campaign, languishing in the lower half of the table and in danger of finishing as low as 17th, exposes deeper issues.

His high-pressing, attacking style demands total commitment, yet players seem to lack the belief or cohesion to execute it consistently, as evidenced by lacklustre domestic performances and a failure to replicate European flair.

McCoist’s hunch that Postecoglou might leave if he wins the trophy underscores a potential mismatch, with the Australian’s ambition clashing with a squad not fully buying into his vision.

Last season’s fan-driven “small-club mentality,” prioritising rival Arsenal’s failure over their own success, likely further frustrated Postecoglou, who thrives on a winning culture.

A Europa League triumph could be a hollow victory, masking underlying stagnation.

With Postecoglou possibly eyeing a move and the squad’s inconsistent buy-in, Tottenham may need fresh leadership to realign the club’s mentality, instil discipline, and bridge the gap between European highs and domestic woes, ensuring sustainable progress.
