Ange Postecoglou sack: Ryan Mason return now close at Tottenham

Tottenham could be close to sacking Ange Postecoglou and returning to Ryan Mason as interim manager, according to iNews.

Katherine Lucas reacted to Spurs’ defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday (4 January) and projected Daniel Levy may look to sack Postecoglou if the poor results continue, despite the Australian contending with a mass injury crisis.

Spurs took an early lead in the 2-1 defeat through Dominic Solanke but were quickly pegged back through a controversial equaliser scored by Anthony Gordon, and Alexander Isak netted the winner before the break.

“How is it possible to judge any coach in those [injury-stricken] circumstances? In the boardroom, is one answer,” Lucas said.

“With the punctuality of Michael Buble thawing out for Christmas, we are fast approaching Ryan Mason season.”

Tottenham would be harsh to axe Postecoglou so soon

As frustrated as Tottenham fans remain – they have now suffered four league games without a win with three defeats – the majority recognise the shackles Postecoglou is under.

Much of the ire is directed at Levy and the board and has been for a long time. The Spurs faithful have been consistent in their criticism of the long-time chairman even when the club were competing in the Champions League.

But Tottenham do remain in the Premier League’s bottom half after the turn of the year and are watching intently the movement of players in the transfer market – Postecoglou himself recognises the immense need for reinforcements.

The Lilywhites are crying out for that first major honour since 2008 and could achieve it again via the League Cup route, now into the last four but faced with a two-legged semi-final tie with high-flying Liverpool.

The Europa League also presents a prime opportunity, as does the FA Cup in which Spurs will face non-league Tamworth for a place in round four. This season can still be salvaged into a successful one in N17.
