Ally McCoist makes ‘Unbelievable’ Tottenham claim live on air – ‘It’s mental’

Tottenham suffered their 17th Premier League defeat of the season when they were beaten 4-2 by Wolves on Sunday.

The Molinuex side established a 2-0 lead thanks to Rayan Ait Nouri’s strike and Djed Spence’s own goal before Mathys Tel scored for Spurs.

Richarlison also got himself on the scoresheet in the second half, but strikes from Jorgen Strand Larsen and Matheus Cunha secured a 4-2 victory for Vitor Pereira’s men.

Pereira’s side, who sit 16th in the Premier League, are now just one point behind Spurs after their win over Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Ally McCoist claims Tottenham’s season is ‘unbelievable’

Postecoglou’s side are enduring a woeful Premier League season but are still in contention to win the Europa League, in a similar fashion to top-flight rivals Manchester United.

Jeff Stelling said live on talkSPORT [06.21 am, 14 April]: “Either of those two (Tottenham or Man United) could finish fourth bottom, which is amazing.”

Ally McCoist replied: “Absolutely unbelievable. Either of those two could win the Europa League and finish fourth bottom at the same time. It’s mental.”

Postecoglou can save his Spurs career via the Europa League

As outlined by McCoist and Stelling, Tottenham’s successful run in the Europa League so far, coupled with their woeful form in the Premier League, is particularly bizarre.

Tottenham are having an awful Premier League season

Spurs are just two points above 17th-place West Ham, and current form suggests that Postecoglou’s side are capable of slipping behind the Hammers and 16th-place Wolves.

Tottenham’s awful Premier League season could cause Postecoglou to face the sack if his side does not win the Europa League.

Furthermore, Spurs could be set to lose both of their next two games in the top flight, as they face Champions League hopefuls Nottingham Forest and champions-elect Liverpool.

But if Postecoglou can guide his side to what would be an unlikely Europa League triumph, then owner Daniel Levy would surely have no choice but to keep the current boss in charge.

Tottenham will have to put in an uncharacteristically strong performance to get the better of Bundesliga highfliers Frankfurt in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, though.

Could Spurs really finish one spot above relegation and qualify for the Champions League in the same season? It would be very them.
