Ally McCoist reacts to James Maddison pile-on as Tottenham star not media trained

Ally McCoist has reacted to the latest antics concerning Tottenham’s James Maddison, who has been enjoying life since winning the UEFA Europa League.

Maddison watched from the sidelines as his Spurs teammates fought hard against Manchester United in a 1-0 victory at the Estadio de San Mamés.

The midfielder sustained a knee injury during Tottenham’s semi-final first-leg win over Bodo/Glimt and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

But his injury has not stopped him from celebrating Spurs’ Europa League win to the fullest, and his most recent antic has grabbed the attention of McCoist.

McCoist reacts to Maddison response to Simon Jordan

When Maddison first signed for Spurs, talkSPORT host Jordan questioned the efficacy of the transfer, and then his celebrations after not playing in the final.

After winning the Europa League, Maddison was quick to respond to Jordan on X (23 May) and again on talkSPORT (27 May) during an interview with Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent.

The England international said: “As a player, you have to accept people in the media giving you criticism. But when you win the trophy as a club, if you’re not entitled to have a little dig back then what’s the point?”

While watching along with McCoist and Alan Brazil on talkSPORT (28 May), Shebahn Aherne said: “You cannot please everyone. James Maddison is so non-media trained that he can go on a golf day and talk like that about Simon Jordan.

“But when they do come out and say something to back themselves, everybody’s there to pile on them anyway. I found that very refreshing.”

McCoist replied: “We can’t have it both ways. I’m with you, Shebahn.”

Tottenham must build with Ange Postecoglou

During the lowest parts of the season, Maddison backed Postecoglou to deliver the trophy he promised in his second season, and it is time for Daniel Levy to do the same moving forward.

The Australian has just delivered Tottenham their biggest-ever springboard by winning the Europa League and earning Champions League qualification.

However, there is still little clarification on the current manager’s future from the London club, which will make it harder to plan the new season.

To avoid further delay in the summer transfer window, Tottenham should focus on giving Postecoglou the resources he needs to continue building something great at the club.

Maddison will just be focussed on making sure he is part of them plans after injury.
