Ally McCoist left stunned by ‘Disaster’ moment in Tottenham game v Tamworth
Tottenham almost capitalised on what would have been a “disaster” for Tamworth’s Haydn Hollis during the first half of their FA Cup tie, according to Ally McCoist.
Hollis used a superb piece of skill to get past Pape Sarr with the out-of-form Timo Werner also lurking, as Tamworth almost set Spurs through on goal with the contest goalless after a dismal first half.
Tottenham were dragged to extra time by their National League hosts at The Lamb Ground on Sunday (12 January), before their class finally showed and they advanced via a 3-0 win.
McCoist, replying to Sam Matterface that Hollis had to get his skilful attempt right, said live on ITV 1 (12 January): “Oh, oh had to be – it was genius and it had to be, let me tell you. I can’t lie to you, I thought it had disaster written all over it, I did.
“I don’t believe he does this, I’m not sure he knows Werner’s there. I think he knows Sarr’s there but that’s brilliant. It really is.”
Tottenham very nearly stunned by Tamworth
A 3-0 win on paper looks routine – but it was far from it for Tottenham who on another day could have been dumped out of the FA Cup by non-league opposition.
Tamworth were brazen and looked to get at Spurs at every opportunity, while defending for their lives on the sporadic occasions the visitors did threaten.
Extra time saw the hosts run out of steam as Ange Postecoglou introduced the big guns, with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski brought on and the latter finding the net.

Spurs discover their fourth-round opponents later on Sunday, but head into the North London derby this Wednesday (15 January) having been put on severe amber alert by a Tamworth side who passed up late chances to steal the unlikeliest of wins.
A rigorous January also sees Postecoglou’s side take on Everton, Hoffenheim, Leicester City and Elfsborg as they dovetail between the Premier League and Europa League.
