Alan Shearer predicts Tottenham v Liverpool, shares Levy stance on EFL Cup

Alan Shearer has predicted that Liverpool will beat Tottenham when the two sides lock horns in North London on Sunday.

The pundit is of the view that Spurs’ ongoing injury problems and defensive frailties will give the Merseyside-based club the advantage on 22 December.

He pointed out that Ange Postecoglou’s side will be high on confidence after progressing into the semi-final of the EFL Cup, although he feels Daniel Levy would prefer they do better in the league.

“I think Liverpool will have enough to win here. It could be a cracking game”, Shearer wrote in his Betfair column (20 December).

“Spurs are really entertaining and good to watch. It must drive the manager mad at times. But they are struggling with injuries and conceding a few.

“Newcastle are in a similar position to what Spurs are. Newcastle fans will say the same thing, they have one or two good results, could be three then all of a sudden your season changes.

“It’s the same for Spurs now. They play Liverpool on Sunday and then in a couple of weeks’ in the Carabao Cup.

“It’s a good chance for Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, but the league is the bread and butter.

“The chairman will want them to climb the league because of the money that it’ll bring in but they have got injuries and that’s why I think Liverpool will win the game.

“I think Liverpool will go there and win but we could be in for a cracking game with lots of goals. Liverpool will just edge it.”

Alan Shearer disagrees with Levy stance as Tottenham prepare for Liverpool clash

This is not the first time Shearer has said Levy would prefer to see Spurs do well in the Premier League than in the EFL Cup.

In a similar Betfair column in November, the Newcastle legend insisted that Levy would rather Postecoglou’s side finish in the top four instead of winning the League Cup.

However, there is no doubt that every Tottenham fan is eager to see the club lift a trophy.

With Postecoglou and co among the final four teams remaining in the EFL Cup, it is perhaps the perfect opportunity to end the London-based club’s trophy drought.
