Mohammed Kudus shines, £20m star frustrates – Winners and losers from Tottenham’s 3-0 win vs Burnley
Thomas Frank recorded his first Premier League victory against Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Richarlison shone for Tottenham in their 3-0 victory against Burnley in their opening game of the Premier League season. Both of his stunning goals were assisted by Mohammed Kudus, who towered above the rest.
This was the best start imaginable for Frank after Spurs’ devastating defeat to PSG in the UEFA Super League final.
But with the stain of defeat long behind the Lilywhites, Tottenham News picks out two winners and two losers from the comfortable victory.
Richarlison cementing his starting spot at Tottenham
Dominic Solanke must watch out as Richarlison seems to be coming for his crown this season.
Not long ago, Richarlison was expected to depart Tottenham at the end of the summer. Now, he’s already scored half of his tally from the last Premier League season.
The forward netted two for Spurs in their victory – the second scissor kick already being a candidate for goal of the season. But Richarlison demonstrated his class against PSG and throughout pre-season.
If the striker can keep this up, he could cement himself as a starter for Frank.
Djed Spence drifting into trouble
Post-match statistics revealed that Djed Spence’s game against PSG was flawed despite passing the eye test.
But the left-back looked like a shell of himself against Burnley. It was as if the Englishman was on a completely different wavelength from the rest of the left side.
With Tottenham set to announce Spence’s new contract soon and him eyeing up a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, he needs to improve for the next game.
Kudus is number one at Tottenham
Mohammed Kudus became the first player to sign for Tottenham from West Ham since Scott Parker in 2011, and he’s already made a major impact.
The right-winger was brilliant throughout pre-season and in the Super Cup final and has brought that form to the Premier League. As well as assisting twice for Tottenham, his overall play was fantastic to watch.
Kudus was fast, technical and flawless in his execution against Burnley. If he hasn’t cemented himself as Spurs’ best player, he’s on track to do so soon.
Wilson Odobert at risk at Tottenham
While Wilson Odobert saw a handful of minutes against Burnley towards the end, it seems like his fate at Tottenham has already been decided.
The Frenchman was expected to succeed Son Heung-min at Spurs, but Tottenham fans were shocked when Mathys Tel was substituted over Odobert against PSG.
He was displaced in the starting lineup once again against the Clarets for Johnson. And judging by his excellent finish, he is not planning on conceding his spot.
As a result, Odobert’s future at Tottenham risks being cut short over the coming months.
