Jeff Stelling corrects journalist as he fumes over ‘awful’ scenes in Tottenham v Man United
Tottenham secured the Europa League final with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Ange Postecoglou’s side managed to hold off the Red Devils to secure Spurs’ first trophy since 2008 in a tense final.
It was a game that lacked quality but one moment of fortune in the first half allowed Brennan Johnson to touch the ball over the line.
However, Jeff Sterling disagrees and instead insists that it was an own goal via Luke Shaw.

Jeff Stelling insists Tottenham’s opener was a Luke Shaw own goal as he rants about ‘awful’ match
Tottenham fans will likely care little about how the goal went in as their trophy drought finally ended.
Pape Sarr’s cross was met by Johnson. The ball then deflected up onto Shaw, who failed to clear his lines.
With the ball edging towards the goal line, Johnson took one last swipe before it ended up in the back of the net.
Many have awarded the opener to the Welshman. However, Stelling insists it’s an own goal as he blasts the ‘awful’ quality of the match.
In response to George Sessions, who stated it was Johnson’s goal, Stelling posted on X (21 May): “Didn’t touch it. Handball og from Shaw. Sums up how awful it has been.”
Tottenham needed to win the Europa League no matter what
Whoever scored the winner will matter little in the long term. Tottenham needed to win on Wednesday and finally end the continuous criticism directed at the side.
It was by no means a great performance, but they did exactly what they needed to do with various players stepping up at vital moments to ensure that they got the win over the line.
Postecoglou deserves a lot of credit for how he managed the match in the second half, with Man United barely creating a chance.
Hopefully, this is now the start of a new era at Tottenham, and they can quickly build on Wednesday night’s success.
However, between now and the end of the season, it is party time for Spurs and they deserve to soak up the celebrations for their recent achievement.
