Why Pedro Porro is increasing his stock as Tottenham defender a 'nuisance' vs Portugal
Pedro Porro is quickly increasing his reputation in the footballing space during the World Cup.
Spain have now advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, and the Tottenham man has been a constant figure in their line-up.
The Spaniards are certainly one of the favourites for the competition and that will no doubt increase Porro's stock should they go all the way.
However, his own personal performances could very well end up doing that on its own.
Big performances often drive big reputations for football players.
And Porro is certainly beginning to make a habit of that at the World Cup while in North America.
How Pedro Porro is proving himself on the biggest stage
Spain's 1-0 win against Portugal on Monday came late but Porro will not care how it came about.
The fullback was once again instrumental in the win, helping keep Joao Felix and Rafael Leao quiet - two extremely talented players on their day.
And certainly a handful for any fullback to have to deal with.
Against Portugal, Porro was handed a 7.1 match rating by Sofascore, but it probably should have been much more.
The Spaniard kept an 89 per cent passing accuracy and was heavily involved in duels throughout the 90 minutes.
He contested 14, winning eight of those battles. Spain's neighbours found it tough to break down through Porro's side.
At one point, commentator Darragh Maloney via Irish broadcaster RTE, stated: "Pedro Porro has been a nuisance for Bruno Fernandes."
And in truth, those words perfectly summed up the dogged performance of Porro.
While it was not his most creative display, it was one that highlighted his work ethic and defensive qualities all in one, some that go under the radar.
And those traits, alongside his attacking abilities will quickly make him one of the world's best, if he is not already up there.
What does Spain win mean for Tottenham now?
Spain's late winner and entry into the quarter-finals now means Porro's return to pre-season will be later.
World Cup stars are mandated to take a 21-day holiday following the tournament.
So with Spain's potential final match now on 10 July rather than 6 July, Porro will miss more of pre-season.
And with Spurs' pre-season taking place in New Zealand and Australia, it will see him miss all of those matches, with the final game taking place on 1 August.
However, he should be back in action for a friendly against Hoffenehim on 15 August, one week before the season begins.
