Tottenham vs Charlton postponement plans revealed as new weather warning in place

Referee Thomas Bramall will have a detailed postponement action plan for Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton, Keith Hackett has said.

Spurs enter this season's Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, when they welcome fellow London rivals Charlton to N17.

Roberto De Zerbi will expect a big reaction from his players, after the disappointing 3-0 loss to Brentford in their Premier League opener.

Charlton, meanwhile, come into the cup tie full of confidence having made a perfect start to their 2026-27 campaign in all competitions.

Indeed, the Addicks defeated Cheltenham in the first round of the Carabao Cup, before claiming Championship wins over Derby County and West Ham.

However, the game is at some risk of being postponed, with the government issuing a weather warning ahead of kick-off.

As per the Met Office via their official website, a yellow warning for thunderstorms with a small risk of flooding has been issued across London for Wednesday.

Indeed, the warning also extends into Thursday, but London isn't covered in that, rather the midlands and vast quantities of the north are set to be affected.

Of course, the Wednesday warning is the key one as far as Tottenham are concerned, as they're set to take on Charlton at 7:45pm.

Speaking exclusively with Tottenham News, Hackett, an ex-FIFA referee, has explained the plan that will be in place for any potential postponement or abdandonment.

"Many of our league stadiums have had large amounts of investment in the substructure of the ground and its drainage systems," he said.

"You regularly see pre-match and half-time the water jets giving the ground a soak before kick off. However with a huge downpour then there is always the risk of blocked drains and flooding.

"I expect the weather warning to be covered in the discussions with the referee one hour and fifteen minutes before kick off. The Stadium Chief and the Police will be prepared.

"If games are called off then plans of a safe egress from stadiums, transport and traffic impacts are part of the planning.

"The referee if he brings the players off during the game will liaise with the ground staff to get their understanding of the situation.

"They will know how long it takes to recover if flooding is a problem. Everyone wants all games to come to a safe conclusion.

"The local Met station is available to give detailed information and a quick call is advisable. So let’s hope that the storms do not impact on the games."

So, presuming that the game does go ahead, how long will it have been since Tottenham and Charlton last got together?

Do Tottenham have the most recent bragging rights over Charlton?

There was once a time when Tottenham and Charlton used to be a regular Premier League fixture.

However, the Addicks haven't been a top-flight side since 2007, and have even slipped as low as League One since then.

But, under manager Nathan Jones they were able to climb from mid-table in League One to the Championship in the space of one 2024-25 season.

Now looking to be a surprise package in the second tier this term, they won't be fearing their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Perhaps they should be though, as the last time these two met was 15-and-a-half years ago in January 2011 in the FA Cup.

Spurs ran out 3-0 winners that day, and a repeat of that scoreline on Tuesday night would go some way to making up for Brentford.
