Tottenham player ratings vs Sydney FC - Mathys Tel shows new quality, Richarlison anonymous

Tottenham Hotspur's tour of Oceania continued with a penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday.

Roberto De Zerbi opted to manage the minutes of many of his Tottenham stars, with the likes of Mateus Fernandes not included in the squad at all.

However, he did go quite strong with plenty of senior players starting the game in Australia.

Interestingly, after Tottenham Hotspur News reported on Gray having the chance to audition for captaincy versus Auckland, he was handed the armband again.

This time, there is seemingly plenty more meaning behind it with many senior players lining up alongside him.

Mathys Tel provides newfound weapon for Tottenham

Mathy Tel will be looking towards next season as his chance to make a true breakout at Tottenham.

So far in pre-season, the Frenchman has been impressing for De Zerbi's side.

Against Sydney FC, Tel was highly lively throughout the match, but of course the defining moment was his goal.

Tel stepped up to curl a free-kick into the top corner, and interestingly, according to Transfermarkt, that would statistically make it his first ever direct free-kick goal.

It was a well-taken effort by the forward, and if he can continue to showcase those qualities, that will be a useful weapon for De Zerbi's Spurs next season.

Richarlison struggles to pounce on pre-season chance

The battle between Richarlison and Dominic Solanke for the starting number nine role will be an intense one next season.

At first, it seemed that Richarlison had taken the edge over the Englishman in the early pre-season showings, and on top of how he ended last campaign.

In just five Premier League appearances for the Italian, the striker has scored twice and achieved one assist.

However, despite Tottenham having 69 per cent of the possession at the time of his withdrawal against Sydney, as per Sofascore, the Brazilian was just never in the game.

There was no moment in the game where he popped up and created something positive for Spurs, and he has effectively handed Solanke an opening to move ahead of him.
