Tottenham: Pedro Porro proves credentials as Spanish media reacts to win vs Saudi Arabia
Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Porro did not begin the World Cup as Spain's first-choice right-back, but he may have reclaimed that role.
After the upset in Spain's opening game, where Cape Verde held on to secure a 0-0 draw, manager Luis de la Fuente opted to make changes.
Porro, who did not even feature against the African island, was selected to face Saudi Arabia as La Roja looked to get their World Cup campaign back on track.
Porro would go on to play the full 90 minutes, as the Spanish national team picked up a 4-0 win in Atlanta.
Now, the Spurs defender will certainly have all the hope he can continue in this starting role moving forward.
And both the statistics and Spanish media reaction suggest that should be the case.
What have the Spanish media said about Pedro Porro's performance?
There was little for Porro to do defensively against Saudi Arabia, with Georgios Donis' side taking just three shots at goal.
However, that allowed him to showcase the attacking qualities that Spain desperately needed in their goalless draw against Cape Verde.
His performance has not gone unnoticed in his home country, with the national media outlet AS speaking positively about his display.
They state: "With little pressure on his own half, he unleashed his natural winging ability in attack. He started by delivering a cross to Baena that drew the first applause of the match, and then linked up brilliantly with Lamine."
"That positive dynamic between them was evident on the pitch. He covered complementary, rather than simply opposing, areas and delivered some dangerous crosses. A surprise to many, he quickly demonstrated why he was chosen."
Meanwhile, Marca were also full of praise for Porro, giving him a match rating of seven.
Marca are quoted as saying: "His first action was already dangerous when he launched a cross from the right to Baena. He consistently provided fluidity to the flank and was another option for Lamine, whether inside or out."
Overall, Porro's performance has been widely acclaimed in Spain, and that would assuredly book his place in Spain's starting lineup against Uruguay.
If De la Fuente snubs the Tottenham defender, the 26-year-old would have reason to be miffed as the statistics show.
How the stats portay Porro's performance
The praise for Porro is ultimately deserved as he was certainly one of Spain's standout performers.
According to FotMob, only Lamine Yamal (8.4) and Mikel Oyarzabal (9.3) performed better than Porro's 8.3 match rating.
The full-back created the most chances in the match with a final total of three. Meanwhile, his crossing was accurate, ending the match with a 50 per cent success from six attempts.
Defensively, he was proactive, winning three tackles, completing two interceptions, seven recoveries and making two clearances.
Porro also won 80 per cent of his total duels, winning four out of five. Overall, there are a few negatives to take away from the Tottenham stars performance.
So, now, like his performance was described, it would certainly be a surprise if he does not start going forward.
