Tottenham insider shuts down Andy Robertson 'talk' he's heard after loss vs Brentford

Andy Robertson was not to blame for Tottenham's 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

That is the view of Spurs expert John Wenham, after the former Liverpool man made his competitive debut.

Roberto De Zerbi started the Scotland captain at left-back, but he could not stop the Bees from dominating at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The 32-year-old came to N17 on a free transfer, with hopes that his experience could help the Lilywhites to improve.

That could not help the North London side from succumbing to Keith Andrews' side.

There has been significant criticism of the left-back, but Wenham is having none of it.

Several observers have accused the defender of losing his pace and not being the same player that he once was.

The Lilywhite Rose account owner believes that Robertson was fine in the contest, and his performance was not one to worry about

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “I thought Robertson was one of our better players.

“Despite the frustrating result, I thought he showed quite a lot on the ball and put in some decent crosses for us, and I think with better players in the box to finish those chances, things may have been very, very different.

“Any talk that he was sort of lost his pace or finished, I didn’t see that at all, I thought he looked absolutely fine.”

The data shows that Wenham is on the right lines, and that the Scotsman was not the issue for Spurs.

He completed 84 per cent of his passes, with nine line-breaking passes and eight into the final third, per Fotmob.

The 97-cap international completed just one of five crosses, for a 20 per cent success rate, but that may be a result of his teammates' positioning.

He made 11 defensive contributions, with five clearances, two tackles, two blocks and two interceptions, while also having three recoveries in the contest.

Robertson also won all four ground duels that he attempted, for a 100 per cent success rate.

His performance was arguably the best for De Zerbi's side and he should have no worries about his ability going forward.
