Tottenham expert demands to know why Spurs have made 'very strange' international break decision

Published on:

Tottenham's decision to hand their non-international players a week off is baffling.

That is the view of Spurs expert John Wenham, after the news emerged that was the case.

Roberto De Zerbi's side have started the season miserably, with two draws and three losses in their opening five Premier League matches.

Tottenham have nine players on national duty, but there are plenty of first-team stars who will stay at Hotspur Way.

The likes of James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus and Dominic Solanke were not called up for the international break.

The decision to give them a week away from training that was revealed earlier this week, has been blasted by Wenham.

What has been said Tottenham's week off plans during international break?

The Lilywhite Rose account owner does not understand why the players have been handed the opportunity to spend time away from the training pitch.

He thinks it is ridiculous, especially after all we have heard is that the a lot of the players are not fit enough, and demanded the know the reasoning behind it.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: "We've had it confirmed this week that the players are going to get a week off.

"I find that very strange.

"The players are going to have a week off, and then obviously two weeks of training, but on what basis do they warrant a week off? Why? We keep hearing, 'they're not fit enough, and they're not in the right match frame,' or whatever."

Roberto De Zerbi needs a tactical rethink on Dominic Solanke at Tottenham - here's why

Why an extra week of training would have been beneficial for Tottenham

An extra week of training would have given De Zerbi more chances to work on the issues that his squad has.

There are plenty of them, on both sides of the ball, that is clear as his side sit bottom of the league.

The benefits of a mental reset, some time away from the pressure may work out, but why not take every minute possible to prepare for the fixtures with Manchester United and Coventry.

If they go on to lose both of those matches, and not pick up maximum points, it will look like a really silly call to not take the maximum preparation.

Only time will tell whether it was the right position, but it seems like an incredible risk to take, given the situation that Spurs find themselves in.
