Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence suffered heartbreak with England against Argentina.

The Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup semi-finals in a 2-1 defeat to their old rivals in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Anthony Gordon put England ahead in the 55th minute, but late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez broke England hearts.

It was particularly disappointing for 25-year-old full-back Spence, who was an absolute colossus for England.

Spence has been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer, but one moment in particular proved Roberto De Zerbi wrong.

And the national media in England waxed lyrical over Spence's fantastic display against Argentina.

What did the media say about Djed Spence's display in England vs Argentina

There was much to admire about Spence's performance against La Albiceleste.

He was a surprise starter ahead of Manchester City full-back Nico O'Reilly, but boy did Spence justify his selection.

One moment stood out especiall, though. With England leading 1-0, Argentina were pushing for the equaliser.

Giuliano Simeonee burst into the area and looked for all the world like he would equalise, only for Spence to burst back and make a crunching sliding tackle that denied him getting the shot away.

Reacting to his performance, the Metro scored him a 9/10 and wrote: "Switched on and aggressive down the left, forcing Argentine mistakes going forward and committed at the back.

"His challenge on Simeone shortly after Gordon’s opener was as good as any goal."

The Mirror went with an 8/10, describing Spence as a "warrior" in their assessment.

The Guardian also went with an 8/10 and likened his performance to England great Bobby Moore.

They wrote: "Djed Spence has won over the doubters and then some. A Bobby Moore-esque tackle to stop Simeone."

The Daily Mail also scored an 8/10 and ranked Spence as man of the match, writing: "Best game of his career until late turnaround.

"Surprise selection but justified that with a fast start down the left, finding an extra gear to burn by opponents.

"He was just as good in defence and didn’t give Giuliano Simeone an inch.

"Saved a goal after half-time with thunderous recovery tackle on same player. Got cramp at wrong time for winner. MOM."

Djed Spence's Argentina display was the pinnacle, but his World Cup proved everyone wrong

Who has been linked with Djed Spence?

It looks increasingly likely that Spence will leave this summer, though his World Cup performances may yet force a rethink.

Following that game, it was reported that Inter have been in talks over a move for the versatile full-back this summer.

Everton are also said to be big admirers, and reports have suggested they want to pay around £25million to take him to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
