Kyle Walker-Peter could make Tottenham return as Djed Spence exit update emerges

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Kyle Walker-Peters could return to Tottenham if Djed Spence follows Emerson Royal out of the exit door before the transfer deadline, according to Alan Hutton.

The Southampton star was linked with a move back to North London earlier in the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting that the Lilywhites were monitoring his situation at St Mary's [Fabrizio Romano, 3 July].

Ange Postecoglou has already lost one of his right-back options ahead of the new season after Brazilian international Emerson moved to AC Milan, while some pundits have tipped Spence to depart before the window slams shut.

Although Hutton expects Pedro Porro to remain as Spurs' first-choice option on the right of defence, he thinks Walker-Peters would be the perfect back-up if Spence is sold in the coming days.

"Porro is your number one fullback," Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

"I've always liked Djed Spence. I don't know why it didn't work out when he made his move from Nottingham Forest, I thought he was really attacking.

"I know the fullbacks have to do different jobs under Ange Postecoglou, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

"I had never seen Emerson Royal as a regular starter. I thought going forward he was ok but defensively I wasn't convinced by him.

"They might look to bring somebody in, I know there's been rumours about Kyle Walker-Peters coming back. He knows the club, knows the team and it could be something that possibly happen.

"They're probably looking, unless Spence is to leave, then they'll need to bring somebody in."

Will Djed Spence exit Tottenham amid transfer rumours?

On the face of it, a move for Walker-Peters makes perfect sense for Spurs as they would be signing a more than able deputy for Porro who knows the club inside and out already.

Tottenham
Pedro Porro has been a standout performer for Tottenham last season.

The question will be whether or not the England international is willing to play second fiddle to the Spaniard in North London when he could be starting week in and week out if he remains at Southampton.

Postecoglou will be able to guarantee him fairly regular minutes with Europa League football now back on the agenda, but for the biggest Premier League games, it will almost certainly be Porro who is given the nod.

Ultimately, nothing is likely to happen unless Spence departs before the end of the window. At the moment it appears as though Postecoglou is eager to give him a second chance at Tottenham.
