Jan Paul van Hecke could've caused behind the scenes Tottenham 'drama'

Jan Paul van Hecke's latest comments could cause issues at Tottenham.

That is the view of Spurs expert John Wenham, who was reacting to an interview that the 26-year-old did in the Netherlands.

Speaking to the national media in his homeland, he opened up about the poor start to the season.

The Lilywhites sit bottom of the Premier League, with two draws and three defeats from their opening five games.

He talked about the 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, and blamed a teammate for an error that helped cause the defeat.

Wenham believes that it could cause drama when everyone returns from the international break.

Andy Robertson was the player who bore Van Hecke's frustration, as he criticised his decision to not put the ball out while Micky van de Ven was off the pitch through injury.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, Van Hecke said: "You know you're down to 10 men, then it's smarter to kick the ball out, so you can wait until Micky gets back.

"You say to each other 'Come on, boys. We are much better' and then you give it all away completely."

Wenham believes that while it was an error from the Scotsman, his teammates' analysis could lead to a problem.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “For all the good things about what Robertson did, that was a huge mistake from him.

“Van Hecke has called it out in the press in Holland, which might make a bit of drama with Tottenham.

“He said we have to be more sensible.

“We’ve got Van de Ven off the pitch with an injury, the ball is about to go out for a corner, that gives you a chance to regroup.

"Robertson has kept it in and then we’ve lost possession and they’ve scored, if it had gone out for a corner, then Van de Ven could come back on.”

The criticism of Robertson is very unfair, it is all well and good saying he should have kicked the ball out in hindsight, but in the moment you have to think quickly.

He has been solid defensively for Spurs since joining on a free transfer earlier this summer.

Robertson has averaged 4.90 defensive contributions per game, with 1.23 tackles, 3.68 recoveries and 2.21 clearances, according to data from Fotmob.

He seems to be De Zerbi's first choice in the position, so he will keep his place in the line-up going forward.
