How Maeson King caught the eye for Tottenham U21 vs Man City despite one setback

Maeson King will be hoping to make an impression on Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham.

The 21-year-old left-back is currently part of Wayne Burnett's Under-21 side, who have been in brilliant form lately.

Spurs have summer signing Andy Robertson and Destiny Udogie as their left-back options at the moment.

However, King's latest display in the 4-2 win over Manchester City's youth side may have De Zerbi on notice.

He has been with the Lilywhites since he was 10 years old, and the boss must have an eye on him.

He played the full 90 minutes against the Citizens, putting in a brilliant performance despite one big mistake.

The Under-21s will be full of confidence as they sit top of the Premier League 2 after the victory

King created two chances and completed the only cross that he attempted in the contest, per FotMob data.

He made nine defensive contributions, with two tackles, one block, two interceptions and four clearances.

His worst moment came when he made an error leading to a goal for City's opener, as his clearance did not get the purchase required and Teddie Lamb scored.

King also won six of six ground duels, for a 100 per cent success rate, showing his defensive acumen and bouncing back from the setback.

Why it may all depend on Destiny Udogie

King may fancy his chances of reaching the senior ranks because of Udogie's struggles under De Zerbi.

The Italian is clearly second choice behind Robertson and has been tipped for an exit in recent months.

He has featured three times in Spurs' opening five league matches, for a total of 87 minutes.

If King continues his progress in the academy and does not make any more errors, then De Zerbi may promote him and chose to move on from Udogie.

Whether that happens probably depends on two things, King's form going forward and Udogie's level of satisfaction with his lack of regular playing time.

If he feels like he should be a starter, he will push for an exit, leaving a void for King to fill.
