Cristian Romero 'problem' picked out despite Argentina win vs Switzerland
Tottenham star Cristian Romero has picked up mixed reviews with Argentina at the World Cup overnight.
The 28-year-old continues to serve as a regular for his nation in yet another major tournament.
He has featured in all but one game at this World Cup and made another start against Switzerland.
Lionel Scaloni relied on him in Kansas City as his side were pushed to extra time in the end.
Eventually, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez found the net to secure a 3-1 win and book a semi-final with England.
Romero played his role against the Swiss, but didn't totally cover himself in glory.
What did the media say about Cristian Romero in Argentina vs Switzerland?
The Spurs man started alongside Lisandro Martinez again and failed to keep a clean sheet once more.
Dan Ndoye got on the scoresheet in the 67th minute to ultimately send the encounter to extra time.
That had been coming as the Nottingham Forest winger had many chances before finding the net with just over half an hour to go.
There was some trouble for the Argentina backline with local media outlet TYC Sports suggesting what they see as the issue.
Speaking about Romero, they said: "The problem he's been having is that he has to constantly keep an eye on the right flank for cover, which complicates things."
La Pagina Millonaria were more complimentary as they described his performance as "solid" while saying he was "good at breaking lines with low passes".
That was echoed by TN, who praised the centre-half as "he did a good job and won several important duels".
The Lilywhites skipper has always been a polarising figure and that doesn't look like stopping any time soon.
The numbers behind Tottenham star Romero vs Switzerland
It's safe to say that the 28-year-old was out on his feet when he was taken off after 105 minutes of action.
It was visible to see but it didn't take away from his performance.
He still maintained a 95 per cent pass accuracy, with five of those into the final third.
That was only bettered by his defensive showing as he chipped in with two tackles, one block, three clearances and two interceptions.
To cap that off, he won five duels to help secure victory on the day and push his side into the semi-final.
A clash with England now awaits.
