Alan Shearer hasn't held back on Lucas Bergvall's role in one of Brentford's goals against Tottenham Hotspur.

After all the talk and excitement surrounding Tottenham heading into the new season, Saturday felt like Groundhog Day for many Spurs fans.

Roberto De Zerbi's side looked miles off the pace, as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Brentford in their Premier League curtain-raiser.

Two Spurs players were dragged off at half-time at the Gtech Community Stadium, and one of those was Bergvall.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been confirmed as staying in N17 by De Zerbi this week, amid speculation linking him with a possible move away.

But, after his first-half performance against the Bees, and one indefensible moment in particular, Spurs chiefs may just be reconsidering his future.

What did Alan Shearer say about Lucas Bergvall on Match of the Day?

Tottenham News discussed the risk De Zerbi was taking by starting Bergvall against Brentford before kick-off on Saturday.

Indeed, Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur were both on the bench and came on for the entire second half.

That showed that either of those two midfielders could easily have started over Bergvall, but it was the Swede who De Zerbi placed his faith in.

Unfortunately, that would backfire on the Spurs boss, as he endured a very rough display in the first half, compounded by one moment in particular.

In the lead up to Brentford's second goal, Bergvall attempted to cutely roll the ball away from Mathias Jensen in a 50-50 challenge, which he inevitably lost.

That allowed the Bees midfielder to advance towards the Tottenham goal, before his parried effort fell to Vitaly Janelt who converted for 2-0.

Speaking about this moment on Match of the Day, Alan Shearer made it clear how much he disliked this decision from Bergvall.

"I mean, that's pathetic from Bergvall," he said. "The lack of a tackle there."

But was Bergvall really as poor as what many are making out against Brentford?

Why Bergvall deserved to be hooked at half-time vs Brentford

In defeats such as the one Tottenham suffered to Brentford, it can be easy to pile the blame on certain players, especially youngsters.

However, in this case, Bergvall probably can't have too many complaints over seeing his performance getting ripped to shreds.

As per FotMob, he created zero chances, made one error leading to a goal, took zero shots on goal and played only one pass into the final third on Saturday.

Meanwhile, he also took only one touch in the Brentford box, was inaccurate with his lone cross attempt and was dispossessed once.

Bergvall won only one tackle and two of his four ground duels, as well as completing just the one successful dribble and took a mere 27 touches.

With Charlton in the League Cup next on Spurs' agenda, he may well be afforded the chance to put his Brentford display right on Wednesday.

However, when Newcastle come to N17 next Saturday, De Zerbi may have a hard time trusting him to start in his engine room after Brentford.
