'This is the absolute worry I have about Dejan Kulusevski after insane injury'
Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski may not come back as the same player.
That is the verdict from Spurs expert John Wenham, as the Sweden star edges closer to a return to action.
The 45-cap international has resumed first-team training after spending more than 450 days in the treatment room.
The 26-year-old has been sidelined since May 2025 with an issue suffered in the 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace.
Kulusevski was the Lilywhites' best players in the 2024-25 season, with 10 goals and 11 assists in 50 matches.
However, concern has been raised over his return to action, which is set to come in the near future for Roberto De Zerbi's side.
What is the concern over Dejan Kulusevski's Tottenham comeback?
Wenham, who owns the popular Lilywhite Rose account, believes the international break may be beneficial for Kulusevski.
However, he urged caution over supporter expectations on the attacking midfielder once he returns.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: "Dejan Kulusevski, he’s training with the first team now, he’s got two weeks uninterrupted to train with them, so let’s hope that we can get him back, because before his injury, he was our best player by an absolute country mile.
“That’s the absolute worry [that he's not the same player], because we’ve heard so little about this injury, it’s obviously been kept very quiet what’s actually happened with him, because I know multiple people and many others do, and not much has actually come out about that injury, why it’s taken so long, why it’s been so bad, and what the actual injury is.
“We keep hearing about knees and patellas and all this kind of stuff, no one really knows what it is, we just had Ange say it doesn’t look too bad, and it’s a minor knock, the day it happened, that was against Crystal Palace in May 2025, it’s insane and he’s not been seen since.
“A sort of on-the-ball collision with Mark Guehi, and then since then he’s never been seen again.”
Can De Zerbi get a tune out of Kulusevski?
Tottenham need someone to step up and get them out of their poor situation, De Zerbi will hope that is the Swedish ace.
They are bottom of the Premier League, with just two goals from their opening five matches, both of which came against Aston Villa last time out.
Footage released by Tottenham of their session on Wednesday showed Deki as he is affectionately known combining with Mohammed Kudus for a goal, which will surely encourage Spurs fans.
However, they should not be placing too much on Kulusevski's shoulders too soon as Wenham argues, especially if it comes against Manchester United on 10 October.
