Tottenham: ‘Seismic shift’ emerges as Premier League looks to make changes
Tottenham Hotspur could have a large part to play as the Premier League plots a potential shake-up in the financial fair play rules.
Spurs may prove to be one of the key cogs amongst the 20 clubs, with the Daily Mail reporting that the league could be about to introduce a “luxury tax” with as many as 17 clubs pushing for a “radical reform” in the current FFP rules.
This news comes in the week that most clubs released their accounts for the 2022-23 financial year, though the Lilywhites are not one of the clubs facing punishment despite recording losses of up to £232 million across the past three seasons.
It is shared that the situation is complex though with a “seismic shift” in relationships between the top six, Newcastle making it seven, as they previously used to vote together.
Spurs maintain high standing in crucial Premier League votes
Tottenham are one of the clubs who wield the most influence whenever it comes to Premier League decision-making. It takes a minimum of 14 votes to pass any kind of reform, a rule which arguably was put in place to deny the ‘Big Six’ a monopoly on power.
With Newcastle becoming arguably the richest club on the planet following their October 2021 takeover, the traditional six becoming seven poses a threat to the established voting model – and a threat to Spurs’ position as one of England’s elite.

However, with 17 of the clubs displeased with the league’s handling of the FFP situation – a situation which has seen Everton and Nottingham Forest given points deductions – there’s little doubt that a club-led motion to change the current rules will pass with flying colours.
What remains to be seen though, is whether Tottenham are one of the three who’d prefer to see things stay exactly as they currently are.
