Fans will question Tottenham as profits revealed – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...
Dan Plumley believes that as long as Tottenham continue to achieve financially then fans will begin to demand a certain level of performance on the pitch as well.
A recent Forbes report (2 June) revealed that Tottenham were the third most profitable sports team in the world, but more notably, the most profitable football team in the world with only NFL teams above them in the list – the New England Patriots and first-placed Dallas Cowboys.
Spurs’ three-year total operating income stood at £414million which was £11million more than the closest football team to Daniel Levy’s side in the list, Manchester United, who ranked fifth. Just three other football teams made the top 20, Manchester City in tenth (£329million), Liverpool in 12th (£295million) and Bayern Munich in 20th (£235million).

“It’s ok from a business point of view, they’ve run a very tight ship over the years and they’re now reaping the benefits of that from a profit point of view even more with the new stadium,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.
“But all the while they’ve had this label of them around not investing in the playing side of things and not having success on the pitch, and that will always follow.“
“When the profits are so good, fans will always question that when you’re not winning on the pitch as well.“

It truly is incredible to see Spurs above Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich on any list. In comparison to these clubs, on-field success has been scarce for the North London club.
While Levy is clearly doing a fantastic job running the financial side of things, Plumey is right that at the end of the day, the bottom line for fans is what happens every weekend inside the stadium, not what goes on in boardrooms throughout the week.
Fans will want to see their club above United, City and Liverpool in the Premier League table, not a Forbes one, and if the club continue to financially thrive, that money will need to be reinvested into the squad in order to keep fans happy.
In other Tottenham news, this is just one brilliant example of how the club is able to post these sorts of profits.
