Daniel Levy may have just saved Tottenham one final time after new contract reveals at Hotspur Way

Tottenham are staring down the barrel of Premier League relegation, just months after Daniel Levy unexpectedly decided to leave the club.

Joe Lewis and his family now have full control of operations at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and many supporters have directed their ire towards the hierarchy all season.

Though Levy was no saint, it could be argued that the former Spurs owner would have done more in January to prevent what is now a serious risk of Premier League relegation.

Igor Tudor saw his side lose 2-1 to Fulham on Sunday, which keeps the Lilywhites just four points from the drop zone.

With Championship football looking like more and more of a reality with every passing week, it looks as though Levy had the club braced for the worst-case scenario.

Daniel Levy included 50% wage cut clauses in Tottenham contracts

Tudor is without a point in both of his first two games in charge of Spurs, who are desperate to avoid demotion, which could reshape the history of the club’s long-term future.

Lewis and Co. are aware that their costly £1billion plus stadium would inflict significant debt if the Lilywhites became a Championship club, as well as the hit they would take from sponsors.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein on Monday, many Tottenham players would face huge wage cuts if the club were relegated, due to clauses written into their contracts.

This includes the majority of first-team squad members, who have mandatory salary reductions, with most clauses seeing a cut of 50 per cent in wages.

This was a provision set out before Levy’s N17 exit in September, in an act of protection if relegation were to occur. A final thank you may be owed to the former Spurs chairman.

Spurs players who should be let go in summer, regardless of relegation

Tottenham have many players on their books who are on big money, but there is still an argument to say that their own downfall has been crafted by their wage cap.

It’s well known that the Lilywhites have a wage structure that they will not breach, with Conor Gallagher’s deal an example of the maximum that Spurs are willing to stretch when it comes to luring new signings.

That said, Tottenham still pay many the big bucks, and some need to be offloaded regardless of what happens when all is said and done this season.

Who Tottenham should sell, even if they stay in the Premier League

It’s hard to predict who could stay at N17 should relegation occur, but for others, it’s easy. The likes of Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario have let the club down for their own different reasons this campaign.

Whereas Pedro Porro and Djed Spence have both proven that they are unable to move in the right direction with Spurs.

Even if Tottenham do stay up, these four are just a couple of players who need to be sold this summer.
