Daniel Levy grateful to Ange Postecoglou amid multi-million Tottenham development

Tottenham saw off bottom side Sheffield United 3-0 on the final day of the Premier League season to finish fifth in the table.

It is a position Spurs have held for the majority of the season, but they could have dropped to sixth had results not gone their way on Sunday (19 May).

With Chelsea defeating Bournemouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, the three points for Tottenham at Bramall Lane proved decisive in holding off their London rivals for fifth spot.

How much did Tottenham earn in Premier League money?

Spurs missed out on their ultimate goal of the season in terms of qualifying for the Champions League, but booking a place in the Europa League is not to be sniffed at.

Reaching the initial group phase of that competition bags a club £3.17million [Sporting News], while going all the way – as Spurs will fancy themselves to do – is worth up to £7.5m.

Beyond that, each position in the Premier League table is worth an extra few million pounds. Indeed, as per the Economic Times [20 May], Tottenham bagged £49.9m for finishing fifth.

Had they finished below Chelsea in sixth, that would have decreased to £46.7m – a drop of £3.2m – which is no small change, even in the days of £100m-plus transfers.

Daniel Levy will therefore be grateful that Postecoglou named a strong side to face Sheffield United, even if the contest did have a feel of a dead rubber to it.

Tottenham miss out on Champions League

Incidentally, Newcastle United in seventh received £43.6m – a £6.3m difference, showing the importance of finishing as high as possible in the division.

Levy will no doubt be aware that each position was worth around £3m this season, compared to around £2.2m 12 months ago.

In total, Spurs will receive £49.9m for finishing fifth. That is made up of £27.1m in UK Merit Payments and £22.8m for International Merit Payments.

It is small change when compared to missing out on the Champions League, which has to be the goal in 2024-25, but Levy will at least be pleased to have not missed out on this additional payment on the final day.
