Tottenham told to ‘sell’ Cristian Romero after what he did for Argentina
Cristian Romero was left red-faced on the international stage after making a costly error that led to Argentina conceding a goal against Brazil.
The defender was still building up his fitness levels during the international break having only returned from injury, with plans to help Tottenham on the domestic front upon his return to England.
This season, Romero has had to settle for making just 14 Premier League appearances as a result of suffering with two separate injuries.

Tottenham told to let Romero go
Although Argentina beat Brazil 4-1 in their World Cup qualifying game, Romero had his head in his hands after the goal he gave away.
The 26-year-old was too slow to get rid of the ball and instead found himself dispossessed, allowing Matheus Cunha to score the Brazil’s only goal of the game.
After footage of the incident was shared on social media, Tottenham fans have not been impressed with their defender away from the Premier League.
As a result, some supporters have told Tottenham they must “sell” him this summer with some claiming he is now “past it”.
Tottenham could cash in on Romero
Although Romero was a regular in the Tottenham team prior to this season, his injury issues this term must cause some concern for Spurs fans.
Season | Appearances |
2024/25 | 14 |
2023/24 | 33 |
2022/23 | 27 |
2021/22 | 22 |
Therefore, Spurs could choose to cash in at the end of the season and it has been reported that there is interest in Romero’s services from elsewhere including the likes of Atletico Madrid, which could prompt the Lilywhites to cash in.
The North London outfit are said to be interested in gaining the services of Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton ahead of the new season, which could serve as a direct replacement if they did choose to let Romero leave.
Romero is under contract until 2027 so Tottenham aren’t under any pressure to let him go in the upcoming window if they don’t want to.
However, with Spurs needing a much better season next term, some players will have to be let go in order to make room for new additions.
With that in mind, someone who has been injury prone and shown mistakes of late could find his head on the chopping board.
For now, the hierarchy will have to assess whether it will be Ange Postecoglou overseeing things or whether a new boss will be coming in, which could change the outcome of these decisions entirely.
