Tottenham fans rage as Romero announcement made – ‘Absolute joke’

Cristian Romero looks set to leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

The Argentina defender has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and reports last week claimed that the 27-year-old had agreed on a contract with the Spanish club, with just a difference in valuation to be worked out between the two clubs.

However, the former Atalanta star will be hoping to help Spurs win the Europa League before he does potentially exit North London.

Romero announcement made as Tottenham milestone hit

Romero’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is under severe doubt and the links with a move to Spain refuse to go away.

The Spurs ace may well depart in the summer but he will always be a part of the Lilywhites history after reaching a significant career milestone.

The N17 club took to X, to announce that Romero had been awarded a special plaque for making 100 Premier League appearances for the North Londoners.

Tottenham fans slam Romero after announcement

The World Cup winner was signed in 2021, initially on loan, and has gone on to reach the milestone in four seasons.

That works out at an average of 25 matches per season, leading to criticism from some supporters for his poor availability.

The veteran has been unfortunate with injury since he moved to England and that has continued this season, as his has made just 18 appearances in the league.

Supporter frustration is fair, he is their best centre-back and he is constantly out of action and cannot contribute which has seen Spurs struggle this campaign.

Now may be the perfect time for Daniel Levy to sell the 42-cap international as he is unhappy at the club and would likely reject a new deal.

His current contract expires in 2027 and his value will depreciate the longer than he stays, it makes sense to sell him while his stock is high.

Given his fitness issues and the fact that the Lilywhites have the likes of Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin in their ranks, it may be time for Romero to depart for greener pastures.
