Tottenham fans fall out over Cristian Romero exit comments – ‘Get rid’, ‘Sell him’

Tottenham Hotspur remain in with a chance of significant success from a wretched season, as the Europa League semi-finals loom.

Spurs will look to stamp down a marker against Bodo/Glimt on 1 May, the winner of the two-legged tie facing either Manchester United or Athletic Club in the final in the latter’s home city of Bilbao.

Ange Postecoglou’s side fell to yet another defeat in the Premier League on Easter Monday (21 April), as Nottingham Forest hung on for a 2-1 win in North London to bolster their hopes of the Champions League, for which Spurs could still qualify next year.

Tottenham fans react after Cristian Romero exit interview – ‘Get rid’

Romero has had a sketchy relationship with the Tottenham Hotspur supporters this year, having taken heavy criticism for heading straight down the tunnel after the 4-2 loss at Wolves on 13 April.

The Argentine World Cup winner has spent a large chunk of the campaign on the sidelines, and when available has often been called out for performances which have not matched his previous levels in the Lilywhite shirt.

Romero recently told Gaston Edul (21 April) that while the focus for Tottenham was wholly on the semi-finals of the Europa League, he would be partial to a potential future move to Spain.

The 26-year-old appears eager to play in La Liga and has been linked with moves to numerous big guns in the country.

Spurs fans have offered mixed reactions to the quotes, some calling on Daniel Levy to “get rid” or leave Romero as an unused substitute for the final games, a player they view as having shown a lack of commitment.

Others defended him, claiming the quotes have been taken out of context and that he remains dedicated to Spurs at least until the end of the season.

Romero likely to leave in summer

However Levy sees Romero‘s future, the vice-captain does seem to be playing it to eventually move on from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This could, however, change should Spurs end their trophy drought this year and consequently qualify for the Champions League.

There are several players Spurs may have to sacrifice if they miss out this year, with Postecoglou also very likely to move on if the Europa League is not secured.

Pressure will build even further on ENIC to sell up, too, as Tottenham fans demand a side they can be proud of on the pitch.

Spurs head to Anfield next up, in a game Liverpool can win to lift the Premier League trophy (27 April).
