Chadder View: On-loan Tottenham ace Joe Rodon deserves one final chance under Ange Postecoglou
Matthew Chadder is a lifelong Tottenham fan who grew up just down the road from his beloved club in North London. He’s now putting his passion for Spurs into words with a daily fan view for Tottenham News…
Perhaps I am alone in this viewpoint at Tottenham but I have always been a fan of Joe Rodon.
For some reason, there is one game I remember incredibly well from Jose Mourinho’s time in North London, and it isn’t even a game that featured many memorable moments.
When we were looking to mount an unlikely title charge during the 2020/21 lockdown season, Mourinho took us to his former employers Chelsea and we came away from Stamford Bridge with a point following a 0-0 draw on 29 November 2020.
We might have even won the match had Giovani Lo Celso made a better decision with his pass in the closing moments. Considering our record away at Chelsea, it was a big point which I thought would propel us toward a title charge, and in my opinion, Rodon was brilliant that day.
I feel as if the defender has hardly put a foot wrong for us, and I have never understood why he isn’t rated more highly than he is by our fanbase. During his time on loan at Leeds United, he has shown his quality under Daniel Farke.
Now I am not saying that Rodon should come back to North London and start week in and week out, but I feel he is a strong option to have within the squad.
It is hardly as if we are spoiled for centre-back options at the moment, and although we have just signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa, most teams need at least four capable central defenders if they want to compete for any major honours.
We can’t continue to rely solely on Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and with the increasing possibility that we will be playing in Europe next season, we will need greater depth.
In a summer where a new midfielder and forward will be much needed, the club could save themselves a load of cash by giving Rodon one final opportunity to prove he is a worthy squad option for Postecoglou.
After all, what else is a loan for if it isn’t a chance for a player to prove his worth? Rodon is still only 26 years old, and he could prove to be a very useful option in cup matches next season, a defender who boasts experience at the top level unlike the likes of Alfie Dorrington and Ashley Phillips.

He still has quality, and if Tottenham aren’t willing to take that chance on him, then they need to make sure they at least secure a reasonable fee worthy of signing an international with Premier League experience and plenty of years left at the top level of football.
