Chadder View: Guglielmo Vicario must become Tottenham captain in the future

Matthew Chadder is a lifelong Tottenham fan who grew up just down the road from his beloved club in North London. He’s now putting his passion for Spurs into words with a daily fan view for Tottenham News…

As much as it pains me to admit it, Son Heung-min won’t be a Tottenham player forever.

Perhaps the saddest day of my life as a Spurs supporter (and believe me, there have been a few) will be when Son leaves the club.

I grew up watching the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen tear the league apart, so when those three players left, I was naturally sad about their departures.

However, I don’t think the emotion of any of those three stars leaving will compare to how I am going to feel when Son says his goodbyes.

As my favourite Spurs player of all time, it was a delight to see him named captain in the summer, and I am glad that he gets this time to wear the armband as few players at Hotspur Way deserve it more than him.

But once he inevitably leaves, a new captain will need to be named, and I think that new captain undoubtedly has to be Guglielmo Vicario, the man who is quickly becoming my second favourite Spurs player behind Son.

When we signed the goalkeeper, I will admit that I hadn’t heard much about him beyond a few social media compilations, and I was hoping we would sign someone such as David Raya instead.

Well, how wrong I was.

Vicario has been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, without a doubt in my mind.

Time and time again he comes up with wonderful saves to keep us in matches and his ability to play the ball out from the back is a refreshing change of pace in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after some of Hugo Lloris’ calamities last season.

However, it is his character and application which stands out above all else.

Some of his quotes, actions throughout and after games and wild celebrations demonstrate that he gets what it means to be a Spurs player, and his love and affection for the club is already clear.

He is one of the best signings we have made in years, and he has already displayed all of the characteristics of a potential captain.

I fear that another club will soon come sniffing around for the shot-stopper, but I would also like to think that he will stick around for a while. He is only 27 years old, which for a goalkeeper might as well be 22 or 23, and he still has plenty of time on his hands at the highest level.

It is likely the Italian will outlast Son in North London, and if he does, then he has to be the man to take the armband.
