Why Micky van de Ven will cost a lot more than Marc Guehi as huge transfer claim made

Micky van de Ven is expected to fetch over £100million if Tottenham decide to sell him.

The Tottenham star is attracting interest from Liverpool, and is understood to be stalling on a new contract in North London.

The idea that he could fetch a world record fee for a defender is baffling for some, who may point to the fact that Marc Guehi only cost £20m when he moved to Manchester City earlier this month.

However, there is a key difference between those two players that fully justifies Thomas Frank‘s side’s stance on the matter.

Why Van de Ven will sell for a lot more than Marc Guehi did

John Wenham, who runs the popular Lilywhite Rose account on X, believes there is one reason why Van de Ven will demand more than Guehi did.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: “Come the summer, van de Ven will have three years of Premier League experience under his belt, he’ll be a Europa League winner, a full Dutch international, will go to the World Cup at a very young age still, and has got experience in both the Premier League and the Bundesliga.

“Tottenham, looking at the values other players go for, would be charging in excess of £100million.

“People will say, ‘but Marc Guehi was only £20m,’ but he was only £20m because he had six months left on his contract and could have gone for free.

“If he had a five-year contract, Guehi would have gone for £70m, and that’s somebody Tottenham bid £70m for last January, maybe preempting that in a year’s time they would not be able to get him.”

Should Tottenham sell while Van de Ven’s value is so high?

There is an argument that the Lilywhites should sell the Dutchman for such a huge fee.

Football is an unpredictable sport, things like injuries and random dips in form can happen, which could reduce his value massively.

However, if they want to be successful, they need to keep hold of their best players, not let them go to top-six rivals, even if they are offering a big sum of money.

It all depends on where Spurs’ hierachy feel that they are, if they think it will take a huge rebuild to get back to the top, then selling would be the right decision.

If they feel like the N17 club are only a few pieces from competiting, keep him and don’t cash in while he is at his peak value.
