Paul Robinson: James Maddison could be signing of the season at Tottenham already
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Paul Robinson has insisted that Tottenham player James Maddison could already be the signing of the season after his positive start to life in North London.
The former Spurs keeper admitted that the midfielder looks to be entering the prime of his career after leaving Leicester, where he wasn’t great every single week.
Maddison has solidified his spot in the England side as well alongside his big-money transfer, starting in the 1-1 draw against Ukraine, which admittedly was a struggle.
“Maddison just looks as though he’s been the right fit for Tottenham,” Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News. “He’s the right player who has found the right club at the right time with the way that Tottenham play and the manager.
“Maddison is 26 now and he looks like he’s coming to fruition in the prime of his career. The way that he’s playing, I mean, I’ve seen a couple of times this year for Tottenham and he was good last year at Leicester, but he wasn’t great every week.
“But he, he stood out in a team that struggled and he got his move to Tottenham and he just seems to be the perfect fit getting back into the England fold starting the game.

“He just looks to be a more mature rounded person, a rounded player and he looks to be the finished article. He certainly started that way this season, the way the Spurs play, he was at the heart of everything that they did.
“I was at the Burnley game, I watched his ball retention, his vision, not just the passes that he makes, but the positions that he takes up to receive the ball to then make the pass for his assists.
“He does look like he could potentially be the signing of the season. Definitely the best player that the Spurs have signed this summer.

“I think it’s difficult. We hear this phrase that England played with a handbrake on [against Ukraine]. Managers don’t send the team out to play with a handbrake on when they’ve got that much flair and creativity.
“I just think that Maddison and England struggled. There was a lot of pride and passion from Ukraine, it was a difficult game for England.”
