Paul Robinson: Ange Postecoglou system can make up for lost Harry Kane goals at Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson believes that Ange Postecoglou’s system could allow Tottenham to make up for the loss of goals after Harry Kane’s summer departure.

The former England international insisted that someone will need to pick up that burden, but questioned whether anyone is capable of that in the squad.

Heung-min Son smashed home a hat-trick against Burnley, with Richarlison also mentioned as someone who could plug the immediate gap left by the exit of Kane.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” admitted Robinson, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News.

“If you take 30 to 35 goals out of any team, there’s going to be an issue, but I think it’s helped because the expectation has been lowered without Kane there.

“The players Postecoglou’s brought in, they’ve been able to play a slightly different system and a different way, but somebody’s going to have to carry the weight of scoring the goals.

“Son got a hat trick at the weekend, but I’m looking at the team, you look at Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min, Richarlison and James Maddison there’s nobody in there that jumps out and says ‘I’m going to score 25 to 30 goals a season‘.

“So, the goals have got to come throughout the team and they’ve done that so far, but they have to do it for the duration of the season.

“But I can see this team scoring a similar amount of goals because of the way that they play. It’s far too early to say whether they’re missing him or not.

“Richarlison has got to take his opportunity, he’s always said he wants to play as a nine and when he plays for Brazil, I really like him there. He gets goals, but at the moment, can I see him or Son getting 25 to 30 goals a season? I can’t.

“If you look at the end of the season and they haven’t won games because they’re lacking goals, then it’s an easy finger to point.

“But at the moment, in the same way as West Ham with Declan Rice, both teams are performing okay without the big superstar that’s left.”
