Paul Robinson: Ange Postecoglou plan set to help young Tottenham players

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson has insisted that Ange Postecoglou’s long-term planning at Tottenham could spell success for the club’s long-neglected youth players.

The former Spurs keeper admitted it was a longer project for the Australian, although rotating too much cost him in the Carabao Cup defeat against Fulham.

With no European football for the club alongside that, there are only the Premier League and FA Cup to play as the opportunities for rotation look slim.

“Well, the problem that he’s got is the team selection that he had in the League Cup and they got knocked out,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“There was a perfect opportunity there to potentially play some players like Phillips, but he changed it up too much in my opinion in the League Cup and it’s cost them.

“I mean, if you draw Manchester City away or Liverpool away in the third round of the FA Cup [and get knocked out] Spurs could potentially only play 40 games this season, which is not good for squad rotation and bringing players in because the manager gets the opportunity to play as strong as 11 week in and week out without having to rotate.

“The strength of Tottenham’s recruitment, the youngsters that they’ve got there and the fact that the manager is willing to give them the opportunity bodes well.

“Yes, there’s a call of when senior players are injured, the treatment room is full, there’s a case of having to rather wanting to.

“But the manager is willing to and he believes in these young players. There’s a lot of young talent there and under a manager like Postecoglou, but it’s a work in progress.

“Nobody expects overnight success, but the building blocks have been put in process. This is, this is a manager that’s hopefully going to be there for two or three seasons, so you get the opportunity to bring players through to make players better like he’s got a track record to do.

“Tottenham had two win-now, managers in Conte and Mourinho that didn’t work, they wouldn’t use the younger players, they would want players for immediate effect. But Postecoglou can see further than that because it’s a longer project for him.”

In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou has shared with talkSPORT where the responsibility lies for any Spurs failure.
