Tottenham will not cancel Sergio Reguilon loan at Manchester United – Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

There is no place back at Tottenham for Sergio Reguilon so if his loan move to Manchester United is cancelled it won’t be coming from Spurs’ end, according to Paul Robinson.

David Ornstein reported in The Athletic on 11 December that there is “uncertainty” over the left-back’s future with both sides holding a break clause in January, but Robinson believes Spurs should aim to leave the 27-year-old at Old Trafford because he probably won’t play in North London.

The Sky Sports pundit say “there’s a reason he left” in the first place as Ange Postecoglou didn’t see a use for him, and that even with Ivan Perisic out long-term thanks to his ACL injury it would then fall to Ben Davies to fill in if certain starter Destiny Udogie was unavailable.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “There’s a reason he left the club. Because the manager didn’t see him as part of his plans.

“You look at the problems they’ve had defensively without Udogie, there’s the potential there that he could [change his mind]. Perisic, as we know, is out for a long time but there’s a reason why the manager let him go out on loan.

“He didn’t see him as good enough to fit into his XI. He could come back to the club and not play because Udogie plays every week if he’s fit or not suspended.

“Ben Davies will play there if Udogie’s injured and I just can’t see where he fits in if he comes back. If the loan was cancelled I can’t see it being from Tottenham’s point of view.”

Davies has been forced into emergency duty at centre-back thanks to an injury crisis within the squad which Perisic is just a small part of, and Udogie has already picked up two suspensions as he and the likes of Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma continue to make matters worse through indiscipline.

The likes of Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Giovani Lo Celso also looked like they had no place in Postecoglou’s side earlier this season, and with everyone available they likely don’t, but have all had to contribute in recent weeks.

So even if there is little in the way of a long-term future for Reguilon at Tottenham it is surely something the manager will at least need to consider next month if he is continuing to face such a shortage of options.

In other Tottenham news, an attacking signing is “absolutely on” for January and Postecoglou has been tipped to be banging on Daniel Levy’s door to make it happen.
