Tottenham unlikely to make January move for Adam Wharton after £18.5million transfer update – Spurs Expert
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham believes Tottenham will no longer act on their interest in Blackburn Rovers’ Adam Wharton after their London rivals Crystal Palace saw an offer turned down for the 19-year-old.
As previously reported by the Daily Mail (24 January), Tottenham scouts have been keeping a regular eye on the midfielder’s progress at Eawood Park.
Wharton has enjoyed a fine campaign in the Championship so far this season. The England Under-20 international has started 22 matches in the league, making four further appearances off the bench, netting two goals and providing three assists.
As per The Guardian (25 January), Crystal Palace are weighing up making another offer for their long-term target after their opening bid of £18.5million was rejected.
In light of this news, Wenham believes Spurs will be put off any potential deal.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I don’t see Tottenham going in for that now.
“When I first heard that we were linked with Wharton, I had it in my mind that it would be a fee of around £5million, maybe £6million with any add-ons.
“After seeing the kind of money that Blackburn turned down from Crystal Palace, I can’t see Spurs going near that deal.
“You’re not going to sign Ashley Phillips for £2million and then go back to the same club and spend £20million plus on a 19-year-old, it just won’t happen.

“Credit to Blackburn, they must have some serious money in the bank if they can turn down that kind of offer.”
