Tottenham transfer news: BBC Sport pundit in instant reaction to exit update as Eric Dier arrives for Bayern Munich medical
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Bayern Munich is an “excellent move” for Eric Dier because he clearly didn’t have a place at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou, says Paul Robinson.
Fabrizio Romano reported on 11 January that the Englishman’s move is a done deal for €4million [£3.4m] with a personal terms agreed, while Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has shared footage of Dier arriving in Munich for his medical.
BBC Sport pundit Robinson believes that the switch gives the 29-year-old a great opportunity to be picked by Gareth Southgate for England in the Euros in the summer, and after just four appearances at Tottenham this term an exit was always looking likely.
Dier’s contract at Spurs was up in the summer anyway and until Postecoglou was hit by a selection crisis brought on by injury and suspension he hadn’t selected the former Sporting man at all.
It was a major drop in usage after playing 42 times in all competitions last term, but the long-time defender and midfielder now leaves after a total of 364 appearances for the club.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “His lack of first-team football tells you a lot and I think it’s frustrating for him as a player.
“He clearly doesn’t fit into the system, or Ange doesn’t want him to play in the way that he does.
“Coming off the bench at times this season, starts in very few, if any, games, makes it pretty obvious he’s going to be moving on at some point.
“Bayern Munich is a fantastic move for anybody, Eric Dier to go to Bayern Munich. Harry Kane, as we know, is already there.

“But we talk about the lack of game time at Spurs, you struggle to see how he would start at Bayern as well with the players and the quality that they’ve got.
“There’s squad rotation, they’re competing in all competitions, so there’s an opportunity for him there.
“You can see he’s not part of Ange’s plans from the lack of minutes there, and for him, Bayern Munich is a fantastic move at this stage of his career and with the European Championships coming up at the end of the season.
“I’m sure he’s got one eye on that, whether he gets picked in Gareth Southgate’s squad or not, depending on injuries and form I think it gives him a real opportunity to be included in the squad should be play regularly for Bayern.”
In other Tottenham news, a shamed figure has been hailed as Spurs look to land a man Robinson would “love” to see in Postecoglou’s squad.
