Tottenham told to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi on Deadline Day

John Wenham has called for Tottenham to make a move for Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi over Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke.

As reported by The Sun on Tuesday 30 January, Spurs were considering a late £50million move for Solanke.

However, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola revealed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Cherries’ trip to West Ham on Thursday 1 February that he doesn’t “expect anything to happen” (Evening Standard, 31 January).

And Wenham believes that the club should instead turn their focus toward Awoniyi, who has five goals and two assists in 11 Premier League appearances for the Reds so far this season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Solanke ticks a lot of boxes, but I would instead prefer the club made a move for Awoniyi.

“Upon his return from injury, he was back among the goals straightaway when he netted against Arsenal, and he is a player who I really like.

“He also counts as homegrown having come through Liverpool’s academy, which is another bonus. I believe he’s a very good player who could fit in at Tottenham.

“He’s a handful for opposition defenders. He has good footwork, he can finish and he’s so powerful as well.

“I think he’s an all-round striker and he is really underrated. He is also only 26, which is a great age to make this kind of move.”
