Tottenham told to sign Conor Gallagher as fresh Chelsea exit speculation shared

Tottenham have been told to sign Conor Gallagher this summer as Chelsea’s “standout” star would only make Ange Postecoglou’s squad stronger, according to Alan Hutton.

Reports emerged from The Telegraph (13 February) that Spurs are set to make a move for the England international during the summer transfer window, should Gallagher fail to agree on a new deal with Chelsea to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

While Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear he would like to keep the midfielder, little progress has been made in talks over a new deal. The expectation remains that Gallagher will sign on the dotted line, but so far nothing is set in stone.

As the 24-year-old’s contract runs down in West London, his transfer value continues to fall and while this will make a move appealing to Spurs, Hutton doesn’t believe that Chelsea will be willing to sell one of their best players to a local Premier League rival.

“I don’t think they should sell him to a rival,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think Conor Gallagher has been one of the standout players for Chelsea this season, he’s been captain at times as well which tells you everything you need to know.

“Pochettinho speaks so highly of him in terms of his work rate, the way he trains and the way that he looks after himself.

“To let somebody like that go to a rival, I don’t think it is ideal. If it does happen, it would definitely make that Tottenham team and squad a lot stronger so it’s only a plus for them.”

Conor Gallagher deal ‘only a plus’ for Tottenham this summer

Gallagher has been in fine form for Chelsea so far this season, scoring his first two goals of the Premier League season in the Blues’ 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Monday (12 February) taking his goal involvement tally to nine for the season.

Postecoglou already has a number of excellent midfield options at his disposal in North London, with James Maddison in particular stealing a lot of the plaudits having made the switch from Leicester City following the Foxes’ relegation.

Whether or not Spurs would be able to convince Chelsea to part company with one of their prized assets remains to be seen, but Tottenham have admired Gallagher over at least two transfer windows now.

If contract talks continue to falter at Stamford Bridge, the door may be open for Postecoglou, Daniel Levy and the rest of the Spurs recruitment to swoop in and secure his signature.
