Tottenham to offer player-plus-cash for Sunderland star in January

Tottenham have been instructed to sign a brand-new goalkeeper in January.

According to Fabrizio Romano [via Men In Blazers, 24 December], the North London side are not expected to sign a new shot-stopper next month.

However, this claim has been disputed, with Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon (29 December) that Sunderland number one Anthony Patterson is an “option” for Tottenham ahead of January.

And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested a potential player-plus-cash deal involving Brandon Austin could be on the cards.

“Tottenham definitely need to sign another goalkeeper,” King said.

“However, signing Patterson in January might be difficult. Austin doesn’t seem close to getting an opportunity at Tottenham. Therefore, perhaps Spurs could offer Austin plus cash to sign Patterson.

“At present, Austin is Spurs’ number two, and it would make sense for Spurs’ number two to be offered in a deal for Sunderland’s number one. That is a deal which could happen. However, would Sunderland, who are pushing for promotion, want to get rid of one of their main assets?

“Money would need to be included, and I don’t think it would be small money, because at present Sunderland don’t need to sell, but Spurs do need to sign a goalkeeper because if anything happens to Fraser Forster, they could be in trouble.”

Tottenham to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson?

Spurs definitely need to sign a brand new number two, especially with Forster expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

It is likely that someone would have been brought in during the summer anyway, and now that Guglielmo Vicario has suffered a serious injury, it makes sense to bring those plans forward.

On paper, Austin should be the next number two. However, he has yet to feature for the club despite various managers having come and gone. Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on.

Tottenham, Brandon Austin

Patterson has kept seven clean sheets this season and could be a good option. As a result, a swap deal which would allow Austin to kickstart his career and Patterson to move to a bigger club might make sense.
