Tottenham ‘to make fresh Marc Guéhi approach’ amid £70m+ transfer news

Tottenham failed in their attempt to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi in the winter transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou has suffered something of a defensive crisis this season – although that could finally be easing with Cristian Romero closing in on a Tottenham return.

As a result, Spurs brought in Kevin Danso during the winter transfer window, while they also made a late attempt to sign Guéhi from Crystal Palace.

The North London club’s £70million bid for Guéhi was rejected on Deadline Day. However, it seems as though Spurs’ pursuit of the centre-back might not be over, with Postecoglou’s side targeting a high-profile defender this summer.

Tottenham interested in Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite

As reported by CaughtOffside (25 February), Tottenham are set to rival Manchester United and Liverpool for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The 22-year-old is expected to cost in excess of £70m. However, after their offer of a similar amount for Guéhi, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – expects Spurs to return for the 24-year-old in the summer.

“Clubs like Real Madrid and United are interested in Branthwaite,” Wenham said.

“Therefore, we’re talking about a player of decent standing here. I know he missed some of this season due to injury, but I’m sure he is a target. He fits the bill, he’s homegrown and he has Premier League experience.

“However, I just think after offering that kind of money for Guéhi in the winter, that tells me that Tottenham will go back in for him during the summer.”

Tottenham should move for Guéhi instead of Branthwaite

Branthwaite and Guéhi are both talented young defenders.

However, the latter is more experienced, having represented England at a major tournament and played more times in the Premier League.

In addition, he is out of contract at the end of next season, which means Spurs might even get him for less than the £70m they offered in the winter. Therefore, a move for Guéhi makes more sense and is less of a risk.
