Tottenham to financially overtake Manchester United amid ‘Significant’ developments

Tottenham are on course to overtake Manchester United as the highest-earning club from matchday revenue in the coming years, according to Dan Plumley.

The club currently sit behind Chelsea in the Premier League by just £1 when it comes to money earned per fan on a matchday, proving how successful the new stadium has been.

And when asked about the meaning behind the figures, football finance expert Plumley admitted that the numbers can be manipulated to look better than they are but in Tottenham’s instance, they’re actually even better than they seem.

“I think given the margins are so small on that particular metric I think it’s likely that Spurs will jump over Chelsea in that regard in the future,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“You have to look at this in a number of ways. There is the average revenue per fan, but then there’s also total matchday revenue and if you look at that from business operations at the club then in 2023 figures from the financial data Spurs are only now behind Manchester United in total matchday revenue and they’ve closed the gap significantly.

“I would suggest that unless Manchester United start to do something differently, even though they’ll sell out every week unless they start to look at other ways to generate revenue from matchday and beyond then I think it’s likely that Spurs will overtake them as well in the future and become the leading matchday income revenue generator in the Premier League.

“Those figures stack up to that, there’s loads of ways to manipulate that data if you look at per fan or by club or overall, but amongst all those metrics it’s likely that Spurs are going to be in pole position moving forward because they’ve not got a jump on their rivals that means for them to innovate and grow and do all the things that Spurs are already doing, or something different, that takes a little bit of time to embed and it’s not as easy as building a new stadium or chucking 20,000 extra seats on.

Tottenham on course to become a global force

Spurs have invested heavily in making the Premier League more competitive from their viewpoint, and the new stadium is helping them to close the gap.

On the pitch, there is clear progress being made with Ange Postecoglou at the helm, and the club are trying to work with him to make the squad stronger too.

But off the pitch, they are benefitting greatly from the fact that the stadium can host events outside of Spurs home games, such as concerts and NFL games.

That is helping them be able to keep up with the top teams on the pitch, and now that they have secured European football for the 2024/25 campaign too things are only looking up.

In other Tottenham news, the club are set to make millions after a Son-driven decision was announced for this summer.
